Welcome to Fingerprint Technician Training!

Congratulations on your decision to start your career as a fingerprint technician!

Fingerprint technicians are in high demand right now, so your chance of acquiring a job and becoming a fingerprint technician are excellent!

What Does a Fingerprint Technician Do?

A fingerprint technician determines whether two fingerprints from different records were made by the same person or two different people.  A fingerprint technician mainly deals with fingerprints that were acquired as a result of being arrested, detained or if someone applied for a job with a government agency or other position where your fingerprints are taken for a background check.

Most fingerprint technicians are employed through government agencies at the national, state, county and city levels.  They are considered criminal justice agencies and mainly work with other criminal justice agencies within their vicinity.

Fingerprint Technician Job Description

The job description for a fingerprint technician will vary from agency to agency; no two criminal justice agencies have the exact same job description, but most will share the essential or core job duties.

For example, a fingerprint technician may only work with  arrested subject fingerprints while others may work with arrested subjects, applicant subjects and unknown subjects.

Typically, however, the job entails:

  • Comparing two fingerprints to determine if they were made by the same person or two different people.
  • Acquiring fingerprints from people using ink and electronic methods.
  • Using the computerized AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) computer system.
  • Assisting police officers and detectives and describing what they find.
