Fingerprint Technician Training in Illinois

Under general supervision, at the journey person working level, a fingerprint technician performs functions related to the automated and manual processing of fingerprint submissions.

Some work/duties of the Fingerprint Technician in Illinois are the following:

  • Sets core and axis of fingerprint images; compares fingerprint images for making identification and verification of identification.
  • Classifies fingerprints; searches existing database and master fingerprint files.
  • Sorts and refiles master fingerprint cards; performs duties related to automated or manual processing of fingerprint submissions.
  • Utilizes fingerprint reader, verification on-line terminal, fingerprint input monitor, Computerized Criminal History (CCH) terminals and other Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) equipment.
  • Checks work of fingerprint unit trainees; assists with pattern interpretations; provides explanation of difficult or unusual pattern types.
  • On an as needed basis, views matching subsystem (M-Sub) on-line monitor to detect a limited number of potential AFIS processing problem conditions; enters a limited number of AFIS matching subsystem commands to suspend processing when specific problem conditions exist.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.


Basic Requirements for Fingerprint Technician in Illinois


Education and Experience:

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires successful completion of an agency approved training program or one year of experience in the classification and identification of fingerprints.

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires extensive knowledge of modern methods and procedures used in fingerprint classification, identification, and recordkeeping.
  • Requires ability to gain and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of the Henry System of fingerprint identification, and NCIC and AFIS classification techniques.


Fingerprint Technician Training in Illinois


Current Latent Print Certification or Tenprint Fingerprint Certification issued by the International Association for Identification will substitute for the required training and experience.
