Fingerprint Technician Training in Alaska

Fingerprint technicians in Alaska are responsible for processing fingerprints through the Western Identification Network Automated Fingerprint Identification System (WIN/AFIS). They are also expected to make complex positive identifications based on the comparison of fingerprints.

They also actively assist in the automation and integration of identification systems including AFIS, live scan and the automated criminal history records repository and associated tracking systems. This position works with various criminal justice agencies to ensure compliance with Alaska laws regarding associated criminal justice matters.

Basic Requirements for Fingerprint Technician in Alaska


  • One year of trainee experience in automated fingerprint identification that included completion of a training curriculum that covered:
  • Fingerprint pattern recognition and fingerprint classification (Henry and NCIC classification);
  • The functions and operation of an automated fingerprint identification system;
  • Fingerprint comparisons of inked to inked prints;
  • Taking fingerprints by use of ink and livescan fingerprinting machine;
  • Preparing for and appearing in court as an expert witness in the science of fingerprints.
  • The required experience is met by service as an AFIS Operator Trainee with the State or Alaska or the equivalent.
